In 2014, NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer embarked on an exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. From searching for deep-sea coral habitat to documenting 19th century shipwrecks, the Gulf expedition was a successful one. A highlight was the discovery of two extinct asphalt volcanoes, dubbed the tar lilies by participating scientists. Originally identified only via sonar images, scientists expected to be exploring a shipwreck, so were surprised to find these unique geologic features. Marine archaeologists tuned in for the dive made way for geologists, and the value of telepresence and allowing scientists from multiple disciplines to quickly tune in if need be was clearly illustrated.
