In 2016 the Netherlands and Australia will commemorate the arrival of Dutch VOC explorer Dirk Hartog and his ship ‘De Eendracht’ on the west coast of Australia. The Dutch diplomatic missions in Australia are well underway with the preparations for this upcoming Dirk Hartog year. The 400th anniversary of Dirk Hartogs landing at Cape Inscription in Western Australia is expected to highlight once again the strong relationship between Australia and the Netherlands. The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Canberra is currently developing a [social] media presence for Dirk Hartog 2016, through which all news items and events that take place during that year will be communicated. The Dirk Hartog 2016 website and Facebook page will provide a platform where heritage institutions and organisations, and Dutch associations in Australia can present their Dirk Hartog activities in order to interact with a wide audience. The website also offers space for background information on Dirk Hartog and the Netherlands Shared Cultural Heritage Policy. In addition a Dirk Hartog 2016 Twitter account will be launched on 23 January 2015. If you are part of an organisation, that is inclined to join in on the Dirk Hartog 2016 commemorations and celebrations, you can apply for funding from the Embassys 2015-2016 Shared Cultural Heritage budget. The budget exists to encourage partnerships between Dutch and foreign institutions and experts, exchanging knowledge, supporting foreign initiatives and broadening the circle of interested parties.
