In America Reiki practitioners are currently free to teach as they - TopicsExpress

In America Reiki practitioners are currently free to teach as they please. There is some small, few and far between State regulations on administering Reiki but not so much of the teaching. I steer clear of words like certification because they give a false sense of a governing body over the practice of Reiki. Words like that also drive the true nature of Reiki away. The true nature of Reiki is culturally Japanese and not at all Western. I find it unfortunate that the UK is under such strict scrutiny in their practice and teaching. It would be a sad day for Americans if our government or its departments were to come down on each teacher and their practices/businesses. To encourage teachers outside of Universities in this country to become accredited through the Department of Education is what I feel to be a disservice to all Independent practitioners. I have been practicing Reiki for over a decade without the government breathing down my neck. Anyone who chooses to push America closer to the regulatory state that the UK has to face is putting all practitioners at risk of regulation by the FDA and the Department of Education. Universities that have Reiki training and bodies that give accreditation for Continuing Education Units in Reiki are already regulated. Why would anyone encourage the Independent practitioner to be regulated? Capitalism. It breaks the spirit that is Reiki. It crushes the Japanese culture behind the practice. It is simply crazy talk. If one distance school pays the DOE $45,000 to be an accredited Reiki school they open up the possibility of all teachers to be forced to pay fees and be regulated. Do I approve of all these students who leave their short trainings still confused and essentially unable to operate in a professional manner? - no. Do I think all teachers should do their best? - yes. But there is no way, nor under any circumstance will I be encouraging government regulation of Reiki in any way. Those that do are not considering the economic or cultural damage they are doing to all practitioners within the United States. I just had to get that off my chest as I just was given a headache over the thought of what regulation would do to the future of all practitioners who wish to teach and practice with freedom. We are so lucky to be free to practice and teach as we wish without having to pay exorbitant fees or answer to the letter of the law. Independent practitioners need to think about what it would mean to be regulated like the United Kingdom. You do not need an accredited US teacher/school for liability insurance, proper training or to be accepted by insurances. Only a holistic nurse can charge a code to be paid by only some insurance carriers. When they integrate us into Western medicine and put us in every hospital across the country then maybe we can talk about regulation. I would love to hear your opinion on this very important topic.
