In April of 2013, Free from Harm helped organize what would be remembered as a very unique and unforgettable event, featuring social psychologist and author Melanie Joy, who spoke to a group of 75 people in Chicago on the subject of social justice activism. The video has just now become available on YouTube for anyone to watch! In this eloquent talk, Joy introduces the Quaker expression, “Speaking Truth to Power” as a metaphor for activism and social change, and she opens by explaining how the movement to end the oppression of women relates to the movement to end the oppression of animals. Joy explains how storytelling shapes our worldview, how it is used by the dominant power structure to shape our beliefs and how we as activists can become greatly empowered by a deeper understanding of how this storytelling operates in our culture. You don’t want to miss this wonderful, eye-opening presentation that will give you much to think about and act on.
