In April of 2014 I created a new half-hour radio program entitled African American History Is AMERICAN History (AAHIAH). This eclectic series includes old-time radio style storytelling of historical events and bios of unsung heroes, guest interviews on both historical AND contemporary topics, music and commentary. Testing of the pilot episode has shown that the program has appeal to a wide range of listeners of every race from 16-86. The main goal of AAHIAH is to foster understanding, promote discussion and expand knowledge for ALL races in both an entertaining and thought provoking way. The series ties in with my Facebook page of the same name, which, currently has over 3000 members...and growing. Like the Facebook page, my hope is that the AAHIAH series will become a forum where open and honest discussions about race in America can take place. The series has already received endorsements from the Harlem Historical Society and individual High School and College teachers. Below, are four video sample versions of the radio series which I am targeting to high schools, colleges and libraries. Each 30 minute radio episode can be split into 15 minute video versions to fit classroom time frames, allowing time for teacher led discussions before and after the viewing of the program. AAHIAH is perfect for the classroom or library setting, as this series can both entertain and educate. Currently, six (6) episodes have been completed (four of which can be viewed on YouTube): ____________________ EPISODE #1 (the pilot) Is a dramatic profile on Viola Liuzzo, who at only 39, was the ONLY White female Civil Rights worker to be murdered in the struggle for equal rights. youtu.be/_55UuJ2K39c (PLEASE NOTE: This radio pilot is for non-commercial demonstration use. Portions of the music used within are representational and no copyright infringement is intended.) EPISODE #2 Is a profile on a forgotten trailblazer, Samuel J. Battle, and his rise from New York Citys first Black police officer in 1910; the first Black sergeant in 1926; the first Black lieutenant, in 1935; to the city’s first Black parole commissioner, in 1941. youtu.be/zXwMN3Bi5v8 EPISODE #2 [PART II] The second half of this program focuses on the origin of Jim Crow and a listing of some of the many segregation laws throughout the South. youtu.be/SSWWZ_ycFE0 EPISODE #3 Focuses discrimination in both the North and South, and the effect Jim Crow had on day to day living from both the Black AND White perspective. youtu.be/uT165HA8dik EPISODE #4 In studio interview with Certified Life Coach, Small Business & Technology Coach, and Inspirational Speaker Crystal Williamson. We discuss her work with aspiring African American entrepreneurs, helping them set their own path and achieve their goals. EPISODE #5 and #6 A two part episode on slavery in America. Both episodes contain segments from the 2001 National Public Radio (NPR) special I wrote and directed called VOICES: THOSE WHO WORE THE SHOE. That program went on to be nominated for a Peabody Award. _____________ Throughout many of the episodes on African American History Is AMERICAN History, comparisons will be made between the many racially fractured periods of American History...and whats going on right now. Slavery was abolished 150 years ago; Jim Crow, only 50 years ago. Yet, Stop & Frisk, Voter ID, Stand Your Ground, Income Inequality, the current unrest in Ferguson, MO and a number of other problems are proof that the detrimental effects of both slavery and Jim Crow...continue to be felt. I am currently seeking suitable venues for both the radio and video-classroom series versions of African American History Is AMERICAN History. I am also seeking further funding to continue recording and editing episodes beyond the six which have already been produced. Thank you for your interest. Sincerely, Harlin C.
