In August 1914, the New York Times reported that the RMS Lusitania was rumored to be hiding in the fog off Bar Harbor to avoid German cruisers. As Patricia Grimaldi points out, that rumored ship was probably the Kronprinzessin Cecilie, a German ship that sought refuge in the neutral U.S. port. Cecile was carrying almost $11 million in gold. After the U.S. entered the war, she was seized and converted into a troop carrier, the USS Mount Vernon. For more, see this 1940 remembrance of the event and a Youtube clip that shows a pictorial history of the Kronpinzessin Cecilie. news.google/newspapers?nid=1913&dat=19400113&id=iYEjAAAAIBAJ&sjid=_mkFAAAAIBAJ&pg=3592,1231767 https://youtube/watch?v=5LNLQMzpseI
