In August 1966 The Star Trek production staff began to change. Gene Roddenberry stepped down to become the executive producer, replaced by Gene L. Coon as line producer. John D.F. Black had left the series, Steven W. Carabatsos came in and shared story duties with Roddenberry and Coon. Edward K. Milkis stepped in to handle post-production. Dorothy C. Fontana resigned as Roddenberry’s secretary to pursue screen writing full time. She had already written the script for “Charlie X” and was assigned script for “Tomorrow Is Yesterday.” Episodes being filmed this month were “What Are Little Girls Made Of?,” “Dagger of the Mind,” and “Miri.” There were three versions of the opening monologue. The first written by John D.F. Black, then Justman and finally Roddenberry’s ultimate version completed just an hour before Shatner recorded it on August 10, 1966.
