In Bruce Lees Tao of Jeet Kune Do one of the things he addresses is the importance of supplementing martial arts practice with exercise and fitness. When I first read this, my first thought, Isnt martial arts exercise also? Turns out theres a difference between a movement practice and exercise. A movement practice is something focused on technique and motor skills. Activities like martial arts and yoga fall right within this category. Exercise is anything that is focused on improving mobility, strength, conditioning, speed, power, endurance, flexibility, etc. In reality you want to appropriately supplement each other. The importance of combining the two is in understanding technique, then exercising using that technique. For example, you learn how to squat properly, something they teach in yoga. Then you exercise with a focus on strength by adding weight to that technically well performed squat. You can apply this concept to life as well. Learn technique, then go out and regularly leverage it for a better you! Do you practice any sort of martial art, or movement practice? If so, do you supplement with exercise (or vice versa?)
