In Case of Emergency Break Glass We have all read signs like this on fire extinguishers. Anyone who has flown is very familiar with the spill about losing cabin pressure in an emergency. Let’s face it, fire extinguishers and oxygen masks are wonderful things to have in the case of an emergency. The sad fact today is that many people view the church in exactly the same way. Need a power bill paid? Call the church! Need someone to bury your relative? Call the church! Having problems in your family? Call the church! Now, don’t get me wrong, these are some of the reasons why a church family exists. The problem comes when we see the church exclusively from this point of view. The church is not intended to be for emergency use only, but it is to be a very way of life for every genuine believer. What if we all took the position of “emergency use only?” Who would be there to provide for the one who had the emergency? Where would the funds come from to pay the light bill? Who would provide the support when a loved one passes away? Who is there to pray, to weep, and to counsel with those whose families are in shambles? One of the ways the Bible describes the church is as the “body” of Christ. In this concept each of us has a duty and responsibility to the other members. We are blessed when other members serve according to their ability, and we are a blessing when we carry out the role God has for us. We must also realize that we don’t have the luxury of deciding we, as members of the body, don’t get to determine the function and purpose of the body. That role belongs to the head of the body, Christ the Lord. How does this play itself out in everyday church life? Let me suggest a few ways: 1. If you are not actively involved in the life of the church where you belong, then you are being robbed of the fulfillment of being used by God for His purposes. A Christ honoring life is one that serves the local church. 2. If you are not actively involved in the life of the church where you belong, then the church is being robbed of the benefit of your service. Examine yourself!!! If you are one of those people who has come to the view the church as being “for emergencies only,” turn your heart back to God, and his family.
