In Christianes sketchbook, shared with us by Jean-Paul Murray, I was fascinated by her watercolour copy of a Lawren Harris painting, wondering to Robert that I found it to be a very depressing scene. Robert McAffee explained to Jean-Paul and myself, that it was actually Tom Thompsons particular artistic technique, on varnished wood boards, rendering the ghostly blackened trunks of dead swamp trees, which was copied by Harris, to become an iconic Canadian image for generations of Canadians. It certainly was a very effective artistic communication of that deadened copse of trees, to emotionally affect this viewer!
