In Concert Excelsior per cantum Rosslyn Chapel ‘the best of their age’ Saturday March 22nd 2014. 7.30pm Viadana Exsultate justi Anerio Christos factus est De Lassus Adoramus te, Christe Palestrina Missa Aeterna Christi Munera Dufay Urbs Beata Jerusalem Josquin Salve Regina Palestrina Sicut cervus We have narrowed down from an enormous field of marvellous sacred music from Rome spanning the early and mid-Renaissance era. Many of the composers had a direct connection to the Vatican and the papal chapel, though they worked at several churches. By far the most famous composer of the Roman School is Palestrina, whose name has been associated for four hundred years with smooth, clear, polyphonic perfection. The concert starts with a true ‘shout for joy’ by Viadana, followed by the wonderful less known composer Anerio, then moves into an older age with works by Josquin and Dufay. Both these composers were the finest of their age. Lassus is often held up as an equal to Palestrina but stylistically very different. A concert of some of the finest music ever written – enjoy! Tickets £6
