In Connecticut as many as 98 women were turned away from DV shelters in a single day. What are we doing about really fixing the problem? For whatever reasons they dont want to pursue the EAA... How unfortunate! According to Karen Jarmoc, This session, the focus is on getting the money to hire 16 additional advocates to work in family courts throughout the state, assisting victims with the restraining order and child custody processes. The state averages 8,900 restraining order applications a year; about one-third become full-year restraining orders, Jarmoc said.In our mind, it all comes down to housing, said Jarmoc, adding that a shortage of inexpensive but decent apartments is causing women who are in shelters to remain there longer. A typical stay of six to eight weeks might be drawn out to several months if a woman with children cant find an apartment that she can afford IT IS TRUE that affordable housing is severely lacking for all groups in our state. However, In the Charleston area, Elmire Raven and colleagues are thinking out of the box. Heres her recent radio show! Enjoy! donnagore/2014/03/02/why-dont-they-just-leave/
