In December 2014, the Indian Supreme Court refused to extend the leave of Italian #marine Latorre for heart surgery. Although he and Girone have NOT YET BEEN CHARGED OF A CRIME, the Supreme Court insisted that they respect Indian law, and remain in captivity in the Italian embassy in New Delhi noting: If the offence is under section 302 of Indian Penal Code, we term it heinous crime. Yet the investigation is not complete even after three years. [see linked article] Where is the MSM on this? Where is Amnesty International? How is it possible that the investigation has taken THREE YEARS, and STILL isnt completed so that these men may have their day in court?! The #marines were not out for target practice. They shot at a boat that was speeding at them, as did the U.S.Navy the same year off the coast of the UAE. In the case of the latter, one Indian fisherman was killed. Yet, the United States sailors involved remain free. Why the disparity? Nobody is asking for the Italians to escape justice. If they were too reactionary, it will be brought out. But how will we ever know what happened, if they dont have their day in court?! The Indian stall tactics are tantamount to #humanrights abuse, and set a dangerous precedent for future anti-piracy incidents. Ban Ki-Moon, who will be in India in the coming days, has repeatedly refused to address this matter in the UN, despite its importance regarding the international fight against piracy. If his reticence pertains to his early ties to India as his first diplomatic posting, should he not recuse himself from the decision, and allow the matter to be put to a vote?
