In December of 1978, I informed my science teacher at Cross Junior High in Tucson - his name escapes me at the moment - that I was moving to Seattle. Gonna be a Seahawk fan? Says he. A what? said I. I was born a Raider fan, and had dabbled with the Cowboys (except when they played the Raiders). But I hadnt paid close attention and completely missed the birth of the Seahawks. Who cares about expansion teams. Seahawks, said he. Theyve got Jim Zorn. Steve Largent. Gonna be a great team. I became a Seahawk fan when I met Zorn in the basement of Country Bible Church (now Hillside Community) a year or so later. To my young eyes he had to be the coolest guy on the planet. Friendly, smart, funny, killer sneakers. I was won over. They werent great. But I became a fan and cheered them through a lot of highs and lows. Even when they signed Brian Bosworth, whod been a sometime friend, sometime nemesis in 7th grade at Sam Houston Jr. High in Irving, Texas. Then came the great hope and great despair of 2005. Tonight was perfect. To be surrounded by family and adopted family making and eating great food, playing football with the little ones at halftime, rattling the windows as my sister Traci led the cheers, exchanging messages with my kin in Denver, and counting down to the Seahawks dominant victory...its indescribable. Does football matter? Maybe not. But family does. And if it brings the family together to do what we did today, then it matters. Ive been waiting a long time to see this, and to see it all led by two Godly men - Russell Wilson and Peyton Manning - and see both be so gracious at the outcome...thats perfection. Lets do it all again next season!
