In December, the Shark Trust, Shark Advocates International and Project AWARE Foundation commented on the New Zealand Draft National Plan of Action for Sharks (NPOA-Sharks), urging adoption of a complete prohibition on the removal of shark fins on board vessels, and to ensure full implementation of a fins-naturally-attached policy by mid 2014. The draft revision of the NPOA-Sharks initially proposed banning finning for all shark species, with the exception of Blue Sharks, by Oct 2015. The ban on removing Blue Sharks fins would then have followed in Oct 2016. The NZ Government has now proposed to bring forward a total ban on the finning of dead sharks by two years, in response to widespread concerns. If adopted, the new policy will require fisheries to either release sharks alive or bring them ashore with fins still attached. Read more through the article below.
