In Deut. 18:21-22, Yahweh gives His people a surefire test for identifying a false prophet: You may say to yourselves, How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord? If what a prophet proclaims in the Name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. So then...whats up with Jonah? He was a prophet. He gave a message in Gods Name. He proclaimed that Nineveh would be destroyed in forty days, no ifs, ands, or buts. And then...well, it didnt happen. How strange that no one goes around saying Jonah is a false prophet even though God Himself said that any man who did what Jonah did was full of baloney. So, what are we to make of this? God is quite clear that Jonah was not a false prophet. So did God LIE about destroying Nineveh? Or did He LIE when He gave His test for a false prophet to the Israelites? The answer is YES on both accounts. Wow, we really dont like to use the words LIE and GOD in the same sentence, do we? Why not? Because once God starts lying, where does it stop? Well, as much as we hate to admit it, God did lie, and He did it right in front of our faces in one of the most popular Bible stories that we teach to our kids. And yet, stubborn us, we continue to INSIST that God doesnt lie. This isnt the path to maturity, folks. If were going to grow, were going to have to man up and stop downplaying what happened with Jonah. The old God didnt actually lie, He just changed His mind routine is ridiculous. God knows the future. When He said FORTY DAYS, He knew Nineveh would repent, and He knew He was making an empty threat. When we start getting honest about Jonah, then we can start dealing with all those other issues that are seriously bothering us in our personal walks--those times when God clearly leads us in one direction only to slam a door in our faces. And those times when He promises us something good only to not deliver. In this post, we look at productive ways to deal with this most difficult side of God--and denial isnt one of them.
