In Dubai, you meet a lot of Pakistanis. They are your neighbors, colleagues, laundry-men, handymen, and cab drivers. Also patients. Its so easy to talk to a Pakistani. They speak your language, they understand your cultural references, they know your songs, your films, your stars, your cricketers. Think about it. With which other nationality can you sit eating parathas and sipping tea, discussing Virat-Anushka relationship with Mehdi Hasan playing in the background? The thing about them is: they are just like us. Except they are seeing their nation disintegrate and we are seeing our nation emerge. (Irrespective of the party in power). Imagine, if you will, you were a moderate, reasonable, educated Pakistani. You are a patriot too. You want to be proud. But you see no good news. Thats when you cling to Afridi, and to petty defeat of indian hockey team..... and to the one thing that made Pakistan: religion. You watch, despair, justify, hope, justify weakly. And then just despair. Indira and her emergency ended; Yahya Khan and Zias legacy, on the other hand, is still going strong. The Islamists are gaining power. The mainstream is scared to criticize them. The power of guns is scarily high. The freedom of religion is more and more restricted there. The mainstream is probably more radical than ever before, but there still exist liberals there. With this in mind, watch the video and weep. Weep for the poor liberal in Pakistan. (PS: I know nothing about this lady. She may or may not be liberal)
