In Fall 2009 I went to WildFire Retreat ~ My home away from home with my mother, Rebecca. Although having your mom take you to a festival when you were sixteen was sometimes embarrassing, it was still one of the most influential moments in spinning for me. It was like seeing family I had never met. Like the way a mutant from X-Men felt when they met another mutant for the first time. I learned so much about the community and the world around me by being immersed in an incredible event and all those in it. One of the fondest memories I had was this. This performance showed me that poi were so much more than those toys that I picked up to get over my self conscious. They were more than skill toys and more than balls on a rope. For the first time I saw poi as a means of expressing, releasing and understanding. Funny enough, I didnt really talk to him then. Five years later and I meet Michael at a party in Salem. Michael, you showed me a path five years ago that I still walk today. Your performance and your spirit shine brighter than most any Ive come across. Thank you for inspiring me to be where I am today and to be where I will be tomorrow. And that goes with everyone.
