In February 1990, I had just began my final year (form 4) at Maseno school and very optimistic about the future. Then the unexpected happend, Robert Ouko who had visited our school only about two weeks earlier was found murdered at Got Alila, Koru in Muhoroni. It was a very somber mood at the school especially after he had talked to us and encouraged the candidates that year. Then the unfortunate happened. The Luo comrades in Maseno said that they are going to beat up the Kikuyu and Kalenjin students in the school. The threat was so rife that we, the little teenagers miles away from home feared for our lives. Though Kikuyus were the most downtrodden by the Moi admin, yet our Luo comrades still classified us with the Kalenjins for reasons I could not understand then (though now its a bit clear) But I hail our wise Headmaster then, H.O. Amadi who made the most wise decision and sent us home for two weeks (barely after the beginning of first term) until the late Ouko was buried and we found the Luo tension subsided.
