In February 1992, Rev. Al Sharpton was one of several figures interviewed for an edition of CBS News newsmagazine, 48 Hours called 48 Hours on Hate Street. It examined what at the time was seen as a growing phenomenon of racial discord being played out in loud and often violent protests. Sharpton -- who was much fancier and heavier back then -- was marching with his followers in the Bronx in response to an alleged racial incident. He had earlier held weekly marches in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, where 16-year-old Yusuf Hawkins was shot to death when he and his friends were mistaken for gang members supposedly arriving for a rumble. They were met by an estimated 30 punks in the neighborhood as they arrived on the subway to inquire about a used car.
