In Genesis chapter 2 God has completed his work in six days. One the seventh day he rested and declared that day holy. Next we find the specifics of God’s work of creation. God had not made it rain on the earth and there was no man to tend to plants so there were not yet shrubs and plants that had sprouted in the fields. Water just came up out of the ground to water the surface of the earth. Then God formed a man out of the dust of the earth and breathed life into his nostrils, and the man became a living soul. So God planted a garden in a place called Eden. He had all the best trees for food there including the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and God placed the man in the garden. A river came out of Eden to water the garden. This river divided and became four rivers and was abundant in precious stones and minerals. Now God placed the man in the garden to take care of it and commanded him that he could eat from any tree in the garden except for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The penalty for eating from that tree was death. Then God said it was not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper suitable for him. God then brought all his living creation before the man so the man could name them. The man named all the creatures of the earth, but there was none that made a suitable helper for him. So God caused a great sleep to fall on the man and took one of his ribs and formed a woman. God brought the woman to the man. The man said, at last, someone suitable for me. She will be called woman because she was taken from man. This is why a man must leave his father and mother and bond to his wife, and they will become one flesh. So the man and his wife were naked and were not ashamed.
