In Gun Boss of Tumbleweed (check out the book at amzn.to/1zwyMlD), Mart Kincaid is assisted by the U.S. Deputy Marshal Harris. From the nations earliest days, marshals were permitted to recruit special deputies as local hires, or as temporary transfers to the Marshals Service from other federal law-enforcement agencies. Marshals were also authorized to swear in a posse to assist with manhunts and other specific duties. Marshals were given extensive authority to carry out all lawful orders issued by federal judges, Congress, or the President. During the settlement of the American West, marshals often served as the main source of day-to-day law enforcement in various parts of the west that had no local government of their own. Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and Dallas Stoudenmire are examples of well-known marshals. U.S. Marshal Moses M. Drew posted an instruction sheet on the proper etiquette in wearing the badge: Each deputy will wear his badge of office outside, on the left lapel of his coat during the time he shall be on duty. Since 1980, the badge has been worn with credentials in one unit. The old shield-shaped badge changed twice, the present form being a star within a circular ring. Whatever the shape and symbolism, the U.S. Marshals badge will always be identified with its legendary mission.
