In Hammers 1965 production of H. Rider Haggards SHE, Ursula Andresss Ayesha offers to share immortality with John Richardsons Leo Vincey, In the scene that follows, Leo tells Peter Cushings Major Horace Holly that Ayesha has offered to extend her offer of immortality to Leos friends, Major Holly & Job (Bernard Cribbins). This scene features some particularly fine acting by Peter Cushing. Its simplicity and deeply felt humanity make it truly memorable among all Peters work. Is it true that Pete wrote his own lines for this scene? Maj. Horace Holly: I suppose theres a time in everyones life when the idea of immortality seems very desirable. But now at my age Id have to give it a great deal of thought. Leo Vincey: Whats age got to do with it? Youd stay as you are. Maj. Horace Holly: Thats not what I meant, Leo. What one would accept eagerly at your age doesnt necessarily have the same appeal at mine. Its the age of the mind thats important, not the body. You see, youre young. Still on the threshold of life. The joy of living is not to be denied, but to know that itll be there for all time, without change. Life at a standstill. Its not quite the same thing.
