In India even to donate eyes or organs, you may need contacts. - TopicsExpress

In India even to donate eyes or organs, you may need contacts. Last Sunday when my elder brother expired at a reputed private Amar Hospital at Patiala, we immediately requested the hospital management for eyes and other organ donation, so that somebody may get life. To my shock, I was told that the hospital had no system of eye or organ donation. They didnt even wish to contact the local eye bank. I had to request a senior eye surgeon at PGI, who arranged for the eye donation. When the team from Medical College, eye bank Patiala reached, the hospital management didnt allow them to take out the eyes. It was only allowed, when we threatened the management to lodge a police complaint and call the media. Its surprising to know that most reputed private hospitals in India, like Fortis and Apollo are not having any system of eyes or other organ donation. Medical infrastructure in India is so dismal, that we dont have any system of Heart or liver transplant anywhere in India or at the most may be one or two hospitals. Thousands of people die, who didnt donate kidneys due to lack of awareness, woefully inadequate facility and tedious organ transplant laws. So many precious lives can be saved every year if proper systems, medical facilities and reasonable legal frameworks are put in place.
