In India only assembling is done, not core level tech research....if you google a little you will find that the chips inside all phones are made by companies like Qualcomm (the Qualcomm Snapdragon chip), Nvidia (Nvidia Tegra chip), Samsung (Samsung Exynos chip), MediaTek and a few other companies...and the chips inside our PCs are made by Intel or AMD...now just imagine if there was a company from India which could make the chips which form the very core of any computer (PC or phone whatever), so many other companies would have come up which will buy that chip for low cost and make a good low cost phone equivalent to the top smartphones of today! The culture of importing technology rather than investing in home grown research was started back in the 1950s by Nehru when he started the hydroelectric and steel plant mega projects in a "collaborative" model...if u google it you will find all those plants and dams were made in collaboration with either british, american or soviet companies...basic research and entrepreneurship was never encouraged, rather we started following a socialist model where companies were nationalised....in contrast, look at South Korea or Japan, they were much less developed, but in 1960s they encouraged private industry, research and an export-based economy (not foreign investment and collaborations)...what is the result? Companies like Samsung, Sony, Hyundai, Toyota are leaders today.....and the countries are rich and developed...
