In January 1964, Emil Zerk also wrote the following: My great-great-grandfather was Leib. He was a Kohn or Cohen, but his descendants took the name Zerkowitz because that was the name of their town. It is located in old Moravia, and is closer to Vienna than it is to Prague. An ancestor of Leibs had been knighted in the 1500s by Emperor Charles because of his bravery. (He may have saved the Emperors life). Leib was practically the only Jew in his little town, and had become very wealthy. His neighbors were jealous of him, and eventually the family was forced to leave. Leib and his wife had 6 sons and 3 daughters. The sons spread out, with one going to Prague, another to Mahr. Weisskirchen, another to Trebitsch, another to Trencin, and the last to Budapest. My great-grandfather was the son Simon, and he became very rich. He had houses in Trebitsch, Pirnitz, and Trencin, and was a merchant and jeweler. He went to the Leipzig Fair in Germany and on his way back, he was ambushed and murdered. But he had hidden his gold in an old religious book, and the robbers never found it....
