In John Ch. 6, Jesus told those that had followed him into the wilderness, after he had fed them from the loaves and fishes, that he was the bread of life. This greatly astonished them, especially when he said that eating of this bread would satisfy their hunger and thirst forever. To better understand Jesus’ metaphor, let’s take a look at how they got bread in those days. First seed had to be planted. Then it was nurtured and watered. When the time was right, it was turned over to the harvesters. Then it was threshed and winnowed, pounded into flour, kneaded into dough, and finally baked. Now let’s see how this relates to Jesus. God planted the seed in virgin soil. It took root and grew. Jesus was nurtured by Mary until he matured. He was watered – Baptized by John - and began his 3 year ministry. When the time was right, he was given over to the harvesters by Judas. He was threshed by the accusations of the Pharisees and winnowed away from his followers (they all denied him). Then he was pounded and kneaded (beaten and scourged by the Romans), and lastly baked (hung on a cross in the sun to die). Knowing what was about to happen, is it any wonder why Jesus would choose this particular metaphor to describe himself. “I am the bread of life”, he told them. He was saying that to satisfy our hunger for God and righteousness, we must first devour what he was telling us. God had served him up to feed our hunger and provide a way to get to Him. Without partaking of the nourishment Jesus offers freely to anyone who asks, you will surely whither and perish.
