In July 2004 PFC Michael Hedgpeth was part of what he expected to be a routine convoy mission, bringing much needed supplies to soldiers at a small retrans site near Mosul. But when his vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device, Hedgpeth’s entire life changed in the blink of an eye. His face was torn to pieces, eventually to be sewn back together by an Army doctor. His eyes, however, were intact, thanks in large part to the ballistic sunglasses he was wearing. Now an Apache pilot, Hedgpeth pays attention to safety messages he might have otherwise ignored. After all, thanks to his PPE, he sees the value of safety equipment clearly.
