In July 2013, Gov. Dan Malloy signed far-reaching, thoughtful legislation to stem gun violence. Gov. Malloy’s leadership is in sharp contrast with that of his challenger, Republican Tom Foley, who recently received the endorsement of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League (CCDL), a fervently pro-gun group opposed to Connecticut’s recent legislation. As passed, the legislation does nothing to prevent hunters from enjoying their sport, nor does it prevent law-abiding citizens from owning guns. It does, through mandatory background checks, increase the likelihood that gun buyers will not be criminals with a history of gun violence and so would be less likely to harm others. A report this summer showed that Connecticut’s overall crime rate has fallen and, importantly, shooting incidents are down. The number of homicides in Connecticut last year was the lowest in four decades. A vote for Gov. Dan Malloy will see to it that the law stays on the books, and we’ll all feel a little safer for it.
