In Kylymnyk, he writes about late night church service, midnight - TopicsExpress

In Kylymnyk, he writes about late night church service, midnight mass, that was attended after Sviat Vechir. Is this a UCC thing? In our orthodox church in Detroit, we have a short service (?vespers), and the meal is eaten afterward. Kylymnyk himself was from Vinnytsia and studied there and in Kharkiv, so I doubt he was UCC. Of course, we now have a large communal meal at the church. We used to go when we were kids, but the past few decades have celebrated more traditionally, with family at home. I asked my mom about this. She said the communal meal began because there were many people back in the early days (our church dates from the mid fifties) who didnt have family, so the supper was begun to accommodate them. But it grew, and many families found it easier to eat at church than to prepare the meal themselves. I grew up assuming this is how everyone celebrated Sviat Vechir, as we didnt really learn about ethnography or Ukrainian folk tradition in our church school.
