In Loving Memory of Emily Rose Olvera -please see my daughters educational photo biography on u tube and read her face book biography. It is a journey of 17-18 years of a girl that was given 8 months to live at 7 years old. Put the two together and what evolves is one elegant story of bravery, fright, love, spirit, beauty, and that of a dying girl. Like Brittany Maynard, Emily Rose died a horrific predicted death from another form of brain cancer. Unlike Brittany, who took her own life in Oregon where it is legal (which the Vatican denounced), Emily Rose died in bed, at home, with hospice, in California. She, nor I, knew there was a place to go where she could have had the choice to end her life on her own terms. Think about it, if you were Emily Rose, what decision would you have made? Take the pills, go to sleep like Brittany chose? Or do what Emily Rose did, and have no choice about it? This includes brain function being eaten away by the cancer, severe pain in her head daily the last few months, blind over the last 4 months of life, not able to walk or feed herself. A physically wasted body of 90 pounds, her dad having to pick her up and carry her to the bed, chair, toilet. Her mother having to hand feed, bathe,toilet, and help her drink- 24 hours ,7 days a week . Not to mention being on orally HUNDREDS OF MILLIGRAMS OF METHADONE EVERY 6-8 hours. For the worse head pain of her life. My heart goes out to her parents, they are now part of an underground world. In order to be admitted the only requirement is that you have lost a child (how sad), they wont have to undergo the trauma of thinking about watching their beautiful daughter waste away while being tortured at the same time. Im sure Brittany was, as were the parents, tormented since diagnosis. Decide and tell your loved ones what you want, how to honor their last wishes. You or your children or loved one could be the next Brittany or Emily Rose. - Robert Olvera MD
