In May of 2013, a bill was introduced in the NC House Of Representatives that would require insurance companies to cover Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy, as well as require them to cover other critical treatments for autism like speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychological care, and psychiatric care that are often either not covered by insurance providers, or are only provided on a very limited basis. This bill was passed by the NC House by a vote of 105-7. However, the Senate would not even bring it up to vote. In June of 2014, the House passed S493, Health and Safety Regulatory Reform, by a vote of 77-33. This bill would require insurance companies to cover everything above and also included additional licensure provisions that aided military families with children with autism. Again, the Senate would not bring the bill to a vote. On Tuesday, Autism Unbound sent letters to Guilford County Senators Berger, Robinson, and Wade, begging them to allow S493 to be heard or, at the very least, come to one of our monthly support meetings and tell our members, who are their constituents, why they did not wish to bring it to a vote. To date, we have not heard anything from the three Senators or their representatives. Below is a link to a copy of the letter. We are sharing this with you at this time because it is our hope that if you will bring this issue to light, it may spur our Senators to action to come and meet with us and explain why they are fighting legislation that is already in place in 37 other states and would help our families in Guilford County. autismunbound.org/berger.pdf
