In Memoriam: JULY 6, 1943 - JUNE 22, 1988. In 1975, TSgt. Leonard Matlovich, US Air Force, became the first service member to purposely out himself to fight the military ban. He also fought for equality for civilian gays, and for greater attention to AIDS in the dark years of the Reagan Administration when he and others were arrested at a protest in front of the White House. His gravesite in Washington DCs Historic Congressional Cemetery has become a place of pilgrimage, and his epitaph is internationally famous: When I was in the military they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one.https://youtube/watch?v=u1T1sVVgrS8
