~In Memory of Bill Dyer who was born December 12, 1912, in Johnson City, TN~ A Typical Sunday Afternoon in the Life of a DyerGram: As the cold winter sun shines down on the Shields-Watkins field, we see a big guy struggling up the steps toward the press box carrying his drawing board. Others scribes tote typewriters. All finally reach the press box where, exhausted after their climb, they sink gracefully into their chairs. The big guy makes himself comfortable and from his coat pockets pulls brushes, pens, pencils, erasers which he arranges with easy reach. The typewriter toters pound away on their story, describing the day as treacherous skies threatening rain, brisk autumn afternoon, but the big guy has to figure a way to draw what the other scribes write. The time for kickoff is rapidly approaching. Then the game begins and Bill follows every play, putting down a symbol for each bit of action on the playing field. As the game progresses, he roughs in cartoon ideas. A timeout on the field --the break between periods --other sportswriters relax from their notes and typewriters, but not Bill. He sees as this respite to start inking-in some of his sketches. So the game--and that DyerGram progresses. According to Bill, the press box is fraught with danger for the feature. Bill says he took a couple of hot coffees down the back of his neck, rather than ruin the drawing. After this afternoon of agony, Bill returns to the News-Sentinel office at eight, leaves his finished DyerGram to be printed and goes home probably to start on the next sequence of Patsy-- the comic strip you probably see in your daily newspaper. While Bill is relaxing on Sunday afternoon, the Monday Morning Quarterback staff is grinding out the copies for you -- -- but thats next weeks story. See you then. ~ Signed Quarterback (I wish that I knew who wrote this article!)
