In Mexico prior to the Spanish conquistadors in 1519, the estimated pre-Columbian population was about twelve million or more. That population was reduced to about one million by 1600. This included deliberate mass murder, death as a result of forced labor and maltreatment, and "microbe shock", through which a majority of the population was infected and died. North of the Rio Grande, in 1492 the estimated native population was over five million. By 1892 the number was reduced to about 500,000.
