In New York recently I was able to fulfil a lifelong ambition by borrowing my book from the New York Public Library. As a committed supporter of libraries, this was truly hallowed ground. It’s a remarkable thing to have an enormous part of my life travel so far to occupy a small space in such a historic place - a little piece of flotsam among a sea of stories. I think Charlie Bucktin would be very proud. Eliza Wishart, however, might be less impressed. For those familiar with Breakfast at Tiffany’s, yes I attempted to inscribe it, yes I was abruptly yelled at, and yes the book remained unsigned and said author duly chastened…
