In New Zealand, MP Nathan Guy was re-allocated the Racing - TopicsExpress

In New Zealand, MP Nathan Guy was re-allocated the Racing Portfolio.. In a speech at the New Zealand Racing Board AGM he said along with stopping Kiwis betting offshore, and tax confusion, one of the key issues this year was animal welfare Under the Welfare issue, he particularly pointed out greyhound racing (not surprising..! ) in a quote below: Animal welfare continues to be an important issue in racing, particularly Greyhound racing. Greyhound leadership has been strong in providing direction and considerable work has been done in the past two years. Reports I have received show that good progress is being made in improving greyhound welfare. The project is ongoing. I hope he and the rest of the racing industry people in the room take his next sentence seriously: I know that many of you here today own horses and dogs and care deeply about them. It is important that you continue to show the public that you take these issues seriously so we can maintain our social license to race. I take that to mean that the pressure is on. We have a good chance, so we need to keep highlighting the misery, the abuse and the cruelty that is so prevalent in this greyhound racing industry, that inevitably their social license will be withdrawn and racing will not only be shunned, but banned. So, keep fighting.. we have come a long way. not far enough, there is still so much work to do, and they are still getting away with far too much. Dogs are still being over bred, they are being abused, kept caged for long hours, and they are still simply disappearing.. and of course, greyhound racing is still inherently dangerous for greyhounds. So of course, we wont stop. You can read the whole speech here: scoop.co.nz/stories/PA1411/S00292/guy-speech-to-the-new-zealand-racing-board-agm.htm
