In November Im going to teach the Theme & Variation section of Coplands Appalachian Spring. I found this gem on youtube: https://youtube/watch?v=91y-NEdTj-g&index=7&list=PLayik69aU2O9ubnj7u8cJJTpbyXccldbs But Im not sure if showing this to my classes is good use of time. I know Martha Graham is very important in Dance, and important to the history of this music, but it is just an odd piece of art that doesnt really move me. I do like that it is ballet with LOTS of fabric in the costumes, but I dont get the story that the dance tells without reading the program notes, and I dont really get how the dance relates to the music. (I have the same reaction to some of Disneys Fantasia animation) Thoughts? How would you use it?
