In October 2012 the Scottish Government gave each local authority in Scotland £35,000 to develop a Local Autism Strategy, as part of the wider National Autism Strategy. To date, Aberdeen City Council has failed to produce either a draft strategy or a completed one. There has been no sign of any report to committee which outlines either the approach to be taken, or the progress being made, and the funding has been rolled forward into successive budget years with not a penny being spent. This is an entirely unacceptable approach and it raises questions over the commitment of the administration to this issue that they do not seem to be concerned by the need to develop a strategy. I sincerely hope that this attitude will change and that we will see meaningful engagement with individuals and families affected by autism to ensure that a strategy is developed which addresses the needs of autistic people in Aberdeen.
