In October 2013, Braxton Rayner was diagnosed with a rare brain - TopicsExpress

In October 2013, Braxton Rayner was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour. Braxton’s tumour is large and wrapped around the brain stem, sitting at the top of the spinal cord. It cannot be removed and the position makes it extremely difficult to get at to determine what sort of tumour it is. He has struggled with pressure in the brain, had several more operations, plus suffered meningitis through both the brain and body. We were finally relieved when we were told in July 2014 that Braxtons tumour hadnt grown, pressure was stable and not to come back to Brisbane until January next year for a check up. If only that was true. Braxton had to get rushed to our local hospital recently after suffering from a seizure and then he got transferred to Brisbane by helicopter. Braxton had an MRI and we were told from the neurosurgeon team that his tumour hadnt grown and that it didnt cause the seizure. We were relieved to hear such good news. However that night another specialist who specialises in cancers had a look at his scans and Braxtons tumour actually had grown. The tumour had actually been growing over the last year and unfortunately we had the wrong team looking at the scans. The only way they can hopefully treat it is chemo. However to treat him with the right chemo, they want to do a biopsy. But if they do that, Braxton has a high chance of losing his sight and movement because of where they need to enter. As his parents and family, we dont want this to happen to our son. Our aim is to get Braxton medical treatment in Melbourne with a team specialising in just brain cancer with better machines and better treatments. If all else fails, our only option is to travel overseas to seek treatment. But in the mean time we will be researching, asking who ever can help us or tell us there is better treatment elsewhere that can guarantee that it will kill the tumour. We hoped this would never happen but it has and we dont know why it has happened to our little precious boy. He is always happy, funny, brave, strong and caring. Life is unfair but we cant keep thinking that, we need to think of Brax and whats best for him. We have set up an account for donations for Braxton’s Fight and are holding an event to help our boy. Our fundraising is to raise the much needed funds to obtain the best medical treatment available and help cover the ongoing costs such as medical, living, accommodation, travel, etc. associated while treatment is being undertaken away from home. We are lost for words but all we can say is a huge thanks to everyone for all of your support you have shown us since the very first day he was diagnosed. Braxton is our hero and he is a gift we will always treasure. Thanks again and for those people who are interested in helping we are forever grateful. We will not let the tumour take our boy away!!
