In October, in 1893, South Carolina Republican Congressman George Washington Murray delivered a speech against a bill that removed impartial election supervisors from the polls on Election Day. The bill was presented by Democrat Congressman Henry Tucker from Virginia, who said the bill was offered because local officials should supervise elections. Murray, however, discovered that most local officials were white supremacist Democrats. Congressman Murray directed many of his comments toward Democrat President Grover Cleveland. During his speech Murray said, I hope that the broad-souled and philanthropic man occupying the Executive chair is too brave and humane to join in this cowardly onslaught to strike down the walls impaling the last vestige of liberty to a helpless class of people.
