In Rawai there is a stretch of beach on the eastern facing shoreline that has been abused repeatedly in regards to Zone 1 rules. As we expose each resort please keep in mind we have discovered how they have done it! That will be revealed later this week... Friendship Beach is not so friendly to the beach in any way. As you can see from the two Google Earth pics taken in 2004 and 2014 the resort has managed to cover what was once open space to wall-to-wall concrete. The good news, if you can call it that, is that Friendship has a very low seawall and the buildings inside the compound, for the most part, seem to be within or close to legal height allowance of 6 meters. At the far south end is an attached residence with signs clearly marking it is private and it is clearly built against all Zone 1 laws. Is it legal? How did the owner get it built and approved? Why hasnt anyone else asked these questions publicly? To remind you newcomers Zone 1 begins at the MEDIAN HIGH TIDE mark, not the MEDIAN TIDE which is halfway between HIGH and LOW tide. This is very important and critical to the story we will publish this week. From the MEDIAN HIGH TIDE line 20 meters inland CAN NOT BE IMPROVED in any way! No sea wall, no structures, no pools. High tide laps at this sea wall every 6 hours or so!
