In San Dimas CA on a February 7 morning, my Mother Rebecca Esther Navarrette Sanchez was born to Gregorio and Adelaide Sanchez. She was one of 16 siblings, ten boys and six girls. While growing up she was called Rebecca of Sunny Brook Farm because of her two braids and the gingham pinafore dresses she wore. Mom attended Catholic school until 8th grade only. She spent a great deal of time picking apricots, peaches, cotton, and walnuts. Mom helped to support her large family. She married a man from Azusa Vincent Cruz and had three sons and one daughter, thats me. They divorced making my Mom a single parent. She moved us to La Verne where she purchased her only home and worked many jobs to support us four children. Mom was known as the life of the party, of all parties!! She would make you laugh from the moment she arrived until she left... Lol She loved to dance and loved all types of music but especially the Big Band Era. She could sing too. Mom loved to sing! Mom wasnt very religious and left the Catholic Church but made us children attend anyway. It was important that we knew God. My Mom was a character. There were many memorable Holidays. She loved April Fools Day! Oh how she loved that day! We would all fall victim to her pranks and jokes! St. Patricks Day was never easy on any of us because Mom pinched you even if you wore green!! Halloween was always interesting too! Like the time Mom decided to dress as a Nun!! She called her niece and asked if she could borrow her habit and dress. I can still hear my cousin yelling, Aunt Becky No! its not a costume!!!! Lol lol lol Mom made the best Tamales, Menudo, Enchiladas, Flour Tortillas, Cocido (beef soup), Capriotada (bread pudding), and Potato Salad. Mom was asked to cook for our family birthday parties, weddings, funerals and more. Those recipes are now dear to my heart. Mom was once caught by her hair stylist, along with her Cousin Rachel, going thru the trash trying to figure out the secret formula used for their hair color... They got busted!! Lol And what about Moms crazy Easter Egg Hunts!!!! She couldnt even remember where she hid the eggs!!! Lol lol lol She loved her garden and everyone elses too. Mom never learned to drive but had no problem correcting our driving skills. Go figure!! Mom had many favorites...
