In September 1996, as Hurricane Fran was bearing down on the Carolina coast, I remember walking a mile or so to the Davis Graduate Library at UNC so I could look at the storms track on the internet. We didnt have internet at home back then. It was something we went to the library to consult. And even then you had to have a student ID. But there were few students (or staff) at Davis that Thursday, and the staff was eager to see what I could pull up. People had already begun to bug-out of both Chapel Hill and UNC. So I was able to finagle my way onto one of the terminals in what was then the Card Catalog area, now the Information Commons. I pulled up a series of different weather websites, closely inspecting the storms path. As I began to truly take the situation in, a librarian crossed over from the Davis Reference desk, and asked: What does the path look like? I turned to look at him, and solemnly said: Its heading right for us.
