In September, while finishing Alive Day -- a compilation of stories about a really lousy day in the lives of combat vets -- I started reaching out to service women and female veterans to see if there would be interest in a similar book of stories about their military experiences. First, I do not want your bio or a list of your assignments and awards. Instead, I want stories about specific things that happened during your military career. Your stories can be about you or about another female you know, as long as they have a connection to the military. Your story or stories can be funny, sad, tragic, inspirational, etc., but if you do have more than one story, please keep them separate. If you wish to remain anonymous, that’s perfectly okay. Some have asked about submitting poetry. I’m not a big fan of poetry, but if that’s how you wish to express yourself, then certainly I’ll include it in the book. There is no page limit or word count for your stories. And don’t worry about getting it perfect. I’ll read it, clarify any military acronyms, delete any swear words, make minor corrections to grammar and punctuation, maybe ask a few questions to get more details, maybe make suggestions, then send it back to you. In fact, we may end up sending it back and forth a few times, but you will have final approval. If you need to show your story to your public affairs office, I would recommend waiting until we’re both satisfied with the final version. (If you show them your original story first, I may need to make changes, so then you’ll have to show it to them again.) Some of you are writing your own books, (or plan to do so someday). You and only you own the rights to any story or poem you include in this book, and so you won’t need my permission to use it in your own book, or to submit it to another anthology or website.
