In Singapore, most students are enrolled in a structured 3-year - TopicsExpress

In Singapore, most students are enrolled in a structured 3-year pre-school program with the aim of ensuring that children are reading when they start school. In Sydney, most children have at least 1 year of part-time school, which is largely concerned with social development....Differences in educational intensity at this early stage may have a considerable impact given the very early appearance of myopia in Singapore. Myopia or short-sightedness can potentially be addressed and lowered in children but this requires significant attitudinal changes both in Government and among parents. It not just about enjoying the sunlight, it is also about lifestyle choices and about children subconsciously focussing at distant objects (after you get past looking at one building after another!) when they are outdoors. I am no opthamologist but I remember looking up the work (hyperlink below and quoted above) of a Sydney researcher when one my law lecturers, Prof Ian McDuff of SMU mentioned her research in class (cant remember how we went from discussing negotiation to myopia, but it was probably down to the Prof McDuff ability to make his lessons more interesting and topical!).
