In South Africa, a new culture has taken hold called izikhothane. With izikhothane, young people battle each other with dance moves wearing fancy clothes in order to show that they are well-off. One of the most-wasteful characteristics of the dance-offs, though, is that participants often destroy the clothes in order to prove that they are so wealthy, they dont really even need them. Is it surprising that most of these youth come from poor backgrounds? In her op-ed, Face2Face Africa Contributor Cherae Robinson compares the izikhothane culture to the Black American culture of poverty, writing, The larger question that looms, however, is how can these youth -- whether in South Africa or America -- begin to define themselves and their wealth beyond the name of a fashion label? How would you answer this question and why do you think some people have a desire to buy expensive things that they usually cant afford.
