In Spain, after the period of hunting, of the thousands of greyhounds are tortured and killed under indescribable conditions. After the period of hunting (and also sometimes during), the owners of galgos (Spanish greyhounds) assume the right to punish those which drove badly out or those which are not effective any more. They regularly carry out a selection in their packs, but most massive is carried out after the season, in February, period of the massacre of the galgos. How much are killed? It is difficult to quantify such acts, generally made in places with the variation, between hunters, in areas where that does not shock anybody. Defense associations of these animals have well difficulty quantifying the number of deaths, knowing that many victims are never found. The SPA takes again the advanced figure by Spanish associations which estimate at 50,000 the number of killed dogs each year. The only certainty, and it is one, they that several thousands of these greyhounds are killed under abominable conditions, are hung, burned, is beaten. Before this fine tragedy, the dogs undergo all kinds of maltreatments which depend on the eagerness and the cruelty of the hunter but also of a so-called code of honour going back to another age. regarded as a task on its honor by the hunter. This last estimates normal to be avenged and to punish it. The innumerable and unimaginable maltreatments inflicted with the galgos generally end in death, in terrible sufferings. One does not count any more the dogs with the broken members, the eyes burst, truffles divided with the shears, half-compartments and notched on all the body, coiled blows… Many associations describe very well, and photographs with the support, this cruelty. After having undergone so many tortures, the dogs are carried out of all kinds of ways, jetés still alive at the bottoms of well or holes, trailed behind the car, sprinkled petrol and burned alives, left with the abandonment in inaccessible and moved back places where the dog will fail long hours. The most known method and most emblematic is hanging. Attached to a tree by the neck, the dog can be hung in height if it were able to him to drive out well, its death being then faster. On the other hand, if the dog is judged bad hunter and dishonouring for its Master, it is hung with a rather low branch so that its back legs touch hardly the ground, obliging the dog to hop not to be strangled, which finishes obviously by occurring but after long minutes of suffering. This slow anguish is deliberately chosen and inflicted by the hunter.Sordid abandonments Even the abandonments are done in cruelty and the abomination. The hunter cannot “be satisfied” to attach the dog to the door of a refuge, or to leave it on the roadside, like that occurs “normally” elsewhere. Not, they would be too soft for these dogs that the hunters want to make suffer until the end.To be sure that the dog will not follow it, the hunter breaks the legs of the greyhound before throwing it some share, in a place where nobody will hear it cry, call and die.
