In Support of Efficient, Effective and State-Of-The-Art Preventative Healthcare for Our Children: Many of our parents and many of us grew up believing that the only time we should go to the doctor is when we feel we are too sick that neither the homemade remedies or our sheer stubbornness would see us through our recovery. I believe that we must teach our children differently. Pam Roberson from the Christus Spohn Health System met with me Friday. I asked her hard questions. She is kind and, I believe her to be honest and caring. She listened to me. She alleviated my concerns about the inevitable changes in healthcare delivery to the point that the only rational, common sense and humanitarian position to take on the Christus Memorial and Shoreline project is to support it. We cannot be so stubborn and selfish in our provincial ways as to deny our children healthier and longer lives...especially those of us who are economically disadvantaged. To that end, we must recognize that a building does not define our community. Our decisions to better the human condition do. The center will provide state of the art preventive healthcare that has been proven effective in other parts of the country. It will significantly reduce the number of emergency room visits. The emergency room at Shoreline will be designed so that more patients will be seen within shortened wait times. It will be able to provide better care that the current emergency rooms combined cannot handle. They will maintain a 24/7 schedule during peak times of use at the new facility. Additionally, the new building could spur economic growth with continuous traffic in and out of the center. Right now, the economic growth in that area is stagnant at best. I live on the edges of the west side and I have spoken to many people. I even spoke to someone who lives right behind Memorial who says that when she and her other family members get ill that they choose to go to Shoreline. Ninety-nine percent of the people to whom I spoke who actually live in the area told me the structure must be replaced with the new. I am sure that the transition will not be perfect and that there will be unforeseen problems, but our biggest challenge now is ensuring that our future learn about nutrition and preventative care so that they will not suffer as much from the illnesses that are prevalent now. Let us unite in community to support this most important transition that brings hope and more effective healthcare for our children.
