In The Fly, Blake makes a poignant analogy between the life of a fly and that of a human being in the pursuit of happiness. In this way, it begs the question of whether or not we can ever achieve happiness, as it is the want of it that makes it so elusive. Happiness is not something we can capture and hold onto for dear life but rather a fleeting moment in time. Looking at the question more deeply, one wonders who is the one really living, and who is the one who is thoughtless, and for that matter, what is consciousness and is consciousness a prerequisite to experiencing happiness? This song teaches me that maybe we should be more like the fly; dancing, singing and taking in the joys of existence with little thought or worry over what tomorrow may bring. It is about living all your dreams in this moment for the sake of existence, for you never know when a thoughtless hand may brush you away. The Fly lyrics by William Blake (The Songs of Experience) 1794 music by Enya (From Where I Am) The Memory of Trees 1995 Little Fly, Thy summers play My thoughtless hand Has brushd away. Am not I A fly like thee? Or art not thou A man like me? For I dance, And drink, & sing, Till some blind hand Shall brush my wing. If thought is life, And strength & breath, And the want Of thought is death; Then am I A happy fly, If I live or if I die. youtu.be/K8zcjaNx0Jk
